In 2016, Crystal pioneered "Roots & Wings", hailed as a groundbreaking future-ready skills programme by industry and holistic education thought leaders globally. NUS is the first university in the world to offer 7,000 freshmen every year, a VUCA-world preparation course based on mindfulness and social emotional intelligence as an essential part of the educational journey.

"Director of the Centre for Future-ready Graduates at National University of Singapore (NUS), Ms Crystal Lim, noted that new opportunities in the maritime industry lies in innovation and digitalisation, commercial maritime services such as insurance, international finance, arbitration, trading and supply chain management as well as overseas consultancy businesses, such as port management in the Middle East and China.
She mentioned, “To be future-ready, students need to be adaptable, have cultural and social emotional intelligence, be tech-savvy and demonstrate resilience. They also need to have a mindset of growth, which means constantly looking for opportunities to learn and develop, and step out of their comfort zone.”
Ms Lim added, “They also have to develop resilience by building a growth mindset, which is essentially a state of mind where you believe that if you put in effort, you can grow your talent.”
